MACHU PICCHU HISTORY The citadel of Machupicchu has had diverse periods of occupation. Taken from the chronicles, of the constructive style and the ceramics found, we deduce. Inicial period: 1300 DC Classic period: 1400 DC Imperial period: 1533 DC Transition period: 1533- 1572 DC Most of the archaeologists agree that Machupicchu citadel was built by Pachacútec; Archaeologists say that the construction period of the citadel was built around the XV century. According to the archaeologists, in this place was victory for the Incas over the Chancas, victory that gave prestige and granted power to the Inca Pachacútec. Machupicchus origin is attributed to Pachacútec. That’s why archaeological studies state this place was really an enclosure. Built as a refuge for the elite of Inca aristocracy, the fortress was located on the eastern slope of the Vilcanota Cordillera, some 80 km from Cusco, the capital of the empire. Its strategic geographic location was amazingly well chosen. Surrounded by steep cliffs and secluded from the sight of strangers by the thick jungle around it, the citadel of Machu Picchu had the special virtue of possessing only one narrow entry point, which enabled a successful defence by a handful of warriors in the event of surprise attack. The citadel had to be made with extreme care, because it was and still is a perfect place for a ceremonial center. The stone that was used for the construction in this wonderful citadel is white granite. |
